The Museum Workers Speak (MWS) Miami chapter had a successful launch in the beautiful courtyard of Vizcaya Museum and Gardens. After a heavy rainstorm, guests were greeted with pastelitos from Ricky Bakery, and were encouraged to participate in a poll asking what were their top 3 challenges in the cultural sector.
The South Florida museum community joined in on conversations to learn about MWS, the origin story of how like minded co-organizers Mariela Rossel Pritikin, Grace Torres, and Michelle Ivette Gomez came together with similar goals and experiences around activism and organizing, and opportunities for collaboration. They also had time to reflect and discuss the challenges South Florida’s museum workers face. This included topics about fair wages, part time vs. full time positions, race and privilege, power distribution, and ideas on how to move forward with action items.
The night was successful thanks to Rebecca, and Vizcaya staff hosting MSW and supporting their efforts. The highlight of the evening was Monica O. Montgomery, Co-founder of the National Museum Workers Speak movement, collaboration with us and sharing her vision. Angela Bolaños, photographer, beautifully captured the evening!
